Israel/Palestine: An update
Over the past two years, I have received hundreds of emails from residents across Buckingham and Bletchley about the conflict in Israel and Palestine. Many have expressed deep concern about the suffering of civilians, particularly children, and have called for stronger action from the UK Government.
I want to reassure everyone who has taken the time to contact me that those concerns have been heard. I know how strongly many people across our communities feel about this issue, and I understand the frustration and distress that many have experienced as they have watched events unfold.
The situation in Gaza is a humanitarian catastrophe. The scale of civilian suffering is devastating and unacceptable. At the same time, the continued expansion of settlements and rising levels of violence in the West Bank are deeply concerning and further undermine the prospects for a lasting peace.
That’s why under the premiership of Andy Burnham, our Government has announced a series of significant measures aimed at upholding international law, protecting human rights and supporting efforts to achieve a sustainable political solution. These measures follow extensive diplomatic engagement with international partners and include:
Recognising that the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territory is unlawful, in line with the findings of the International Court of Justice.
Banning the import of goods from illegal Israeli settlements.
Taking action against companies and individuals who facilitate, support or profit from illegal settlements.
Prohibiting the advertising and promotion in the UK of land and property located within illegal settlements.
Strengthening sanctions powers to target serious violations of international humanitarian law.
Sanctioning extremist settlers who have supported or incited violence against Palestinian communities.
I welcome these steps. They demonstrate a willingness to uphold international law and human rights while supporting the only viable route to a lasting peace: a safe and secure Israel alongside a safe and secure Palestine.
It is also important to be clear about what this debate should and should not involve. Criticism of the actions of the Israeli Government must never become antisemitism. Jewish people should never be held responsible for the decisions of any government. Equally, Hamas's terrorist attacks on 7 October 2023 were horrific and must continue to be condemned, while efforts to secure the release of all remaining hostages must continue.
The long-term goal must be a future in which both Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace, security and dignity. A negotiated two-state solution remains the clearest path towards that outcome, and these latest measures reflect a stronger commitment to defending that principle.
Many local residents have campaigned passionately on this issue. Some have also felt frustrated that they were not seeing enough action from the Government. While these measures will not end the conflict overnight, they form part of a wider effort to uphold international law, protect civilians and help create the conditions for a lasting political settlement.
I will continue working with ministerial colleagues and following developments closely. Above all, I will continue to support serious efforts to advance peace, protect civilians and secure a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
Thank you to everyone who has contacted me and shared their views. I promise I have been listening.
