Israel/Gaza: Taking necessary steps
Yesterday’s announcement by the UK Government to suspend trade talks with Israel and impose targeted sanctions shows our commitment to demonstrating leadership in the face of the deepening crisis in Gaza. These are necessary steps.
The escalating violence and humanitarian catastrophe must come to an end.
The Israeli Government’s continued military operations, the obstruction of vital humanitarian aid, and the use of dehumanising rhetoric by senior Israeli officials have taken an unconscionable toll on civilians.
I agree with the joint statement from our Prime Minister, and the leaders of France and Canada, that Israel’s actions risk breaching international humanitarian law and run counter to the values us Britons uphold.
Israel has every right to defend its citizens against terrorism, and the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7 remain abhorrent. However, the current military escalation is wholly disproportionate. It has inflicted immense suffering on the people of Gaza and undermines prospects for a lasting peace.
The UK’s decision to take concrete action sends a clear message: we will not stand by while the Netanyahu Government pursues policies that are causing millions to suffer. The international community must do more to protect civilians, demand accountability, and work towards a diplomatic resolution.
We urgently need a ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and unfettered humanitarian access to Gaza. These steps must be followed by renewed international efforts to secure a long-term two-state solution.
This is a moment for moral clarity and political courage. I will always advocate for a principled British foreign policy that prioritises peace, human rights, and the rule of international law.
