Hosepipe ban in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes
My thoughts, actions and next steps
I’ve noticed that has been some confusion and misinformation about who is exempt from the current hosepipe ban, so I want to be clear: receiving benefits does not automatically exempt someone from these restrictions.
Any exemptions are determined by water companies and are based on specific circumstances, such as certain medical needs or eligibility for schemes like WaterSure. They are not granted simply because someone receives benefits.
It is important that people have accurate information so they can follow the rules and avoid unintentionally facing enforcement action. I will continue to keep a close eye on Anglian Water’s communications and correspondence on this issue, and I expect clear, consistent guidance for customers throughout this period.
I recognise that hosepipe bans are not ideal, and as someone who lives in the Buckinghamshire countryside – I get it. They can be frustrating for households, particularly during periods of hot and dry weather, and they are a sign that we need to do more to improve the resilience of our water system.
That is why the long-term solution cannot simply be asking people to use less water during times of pressure. We need investment in the infrastructure needed to secure supplies for the future.
The Labour Government has committed to accelerating the delivery of major water infrastructure, including new reservoirs. After more than 30 years without a new major reservoir being built, we have taken steps to fast-track nationally significant projects, including proposed reservoirs in East Anglia and Lincolnshire. These projects will help strengthen water security, support communities and unlock much-needed housing growth.
However, this kind of infrastructure takes time to deliver. New reservoirs cannot be built overnight, which is why we need both immediate measures to manage current pressures and a long-term plan to ensure our water supplies are resilient for future generations.
In the meantime, I encourage residents to rely on official guidance from their water supplier and not claims circulating online. Clear information and responsible water use are essential as we manage these challenges together.
